British dance giants Basement Jaxx have confirmed details of a new, highly experimental, download album.
Basement Jaxx grew out of top London house night ‘Rooty’, inventing their own tracks after growing tired of hearing producers fail to get things quite right. Although their material is typically poppy and dancefloor driven, Basement Jaxx do have an experimental side.
In solo DJ sets both Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe have spun material that borders on being near ambient, yet these influences rarely seep through into the duo’s music. Now Basement Jaxx have confirmed details of a new free download, which sees them take on board these minimal and ambient productions.
‘Zephyr’ was recorded during sessions for the Basement Jaxx album ‘Scars. Initially the duo had desired to release a two disc album, with one half consisting of pop material and the other of a lengthy soundscape.
Deciding that this was simply too schizophrenic, Basement Jaxx have now decided to release the material as a stand alone download album.
Titled ‘Zephyr’ the material is deeply unlike the group’s classic sound. Deep and dense, the tracks were recorded over a two year period in studios across Berlin, New York, London and Bath.
Featuring a raft of guest stars ‘Zephyr’ is set to include legendary Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke, and New York jazz vocalist Jose James.
Basement Jaxx are due to release ‘Zephyr’ as a free download on December 7th.
